Black History Word’bration 2020

The Black History Word’ebration is a black history month celebration by the Poetavango Collective. It takes place every February. It is an event geared exclusively to celebrating the history and achievements of Africans and people of African descent from across the globe. Through poetry, spoken word, storytelling and music, the celebrations touch on important black/African historical facts, current community/national/global challenges that black people go through as well the advancements of Africans at home and in the Diaspora.

The Black History Word’edration is an event where one can learn a great deal about black people and their history, as well as to gain pride and esteem in ones racial identity.

The Black History Word’bration 2020 was a success of an event, both in presentation and audience attendance. The collective had targeted 80 members of the audience but managed to attach well over 100 people! The small auditorium in the Nhabe Museum was packed to capacity with poetry and spoken word fanatics.

Performers included Mista Poke, AnthXny, Vygos, Skrippah Tee, Garona, Goodie the Bad, Silas Strange and Dredd X as the MC. There were also two poets who graced the stage during the open mic slot. These were Ofentse and Lorato, who has been performed on Poetavango stages before, but only students during the students’ poetry competitions.

The next Black History Word’ebration will be on Saturday 27th February 2021.
